What Does Your Bedroom Dcor Say About You?

Sunday, January 29th, 2017

By Francis Rodrigues

The bedroom has gone full circle in history. Back in the day, Kings held court in their bedroom while surrounded by a multitude of pillows. All which could be viewed as the life of luxury or laziness.

American cottages consisted of one big room. This room held every activity thinkable: eating, sleeping, recreation, bathing, and sewing. As families grew and architects became more educated, homes were built that separated one large room into a bedroom.

Today, bedrooms are a place to meditate, write letters, exercise, watch television, and sleep. A true statement of YOU.

Sowhat about the dcor?

Your bed is an essential piece of furniture. But that doesn’t mean that it has to look like any ordinary bed. Your room needs to make a statement about your personality and that begins with the bed you select. What type of bed are you?

YouTube Preview Image

Most bedrooms contain a mattress and foundation, nightstands, dresser, perhaps a chair and of course, a television. You should select each piece with care, as they will be with you for quite awhile. Be certain to select top quality. Furniture made out of maple or oak stand strong and makes a statement of comfort.

vThe main focus of your room is your bedroom set. The style you select, contemporary, modern, or antique, will set the stage for your room dcor. For instance, you wouldn’t mix country with modern furniture or bright colors with earth tones. Unless, you’re a very unique individual.

Contemporary and Modern

A contemporary or modern bedroom set makes a statement of Today. On the fast track, up by the alarm, off to work or school, and never really resting until dusk. The beautiful pieces of furniture, some crafted from wood while others made from compressed board, is a style that changes by the decade.

Country and Antique.

A country or antique bedroom set makes a statement of Home. Associated with warmness and living in a day when things were simple, this style of furniture tells visitors you’re warm hearted and laid back.

Dcor Tip

Your drapes and bedding are two accessories you can easily change. Never change your comforter, duvet cover or quilt without considering refreshing the drapes or blinds. Stay with a rather neutral color.

Wallpaper provides you with a multitude of styles and designs. But painting your walls is easier. Using a few techniques like rolling or sponging the paint, you can make paint appear as brilliant and textured as wallpaper. Plus, it’s easier to paint over paint than peel off wallpaper. A soft tone of paint compliments bright bedding.

Lighting sets the mood. Not enough light will make one sleepy and almost depressed. The rooms’ atmosphere is set by the lighting. Lights under the bed or dimmers on wall sconces make the room glow in an inviting way. Mood lighting is especially effective when it is visible from a sitting area off the bedroom.

BDSM as business: An interview with the owners of a dungeon

Sunday, January 29th, 2017

Sunday, October 21, 2007

Torture proliferates American headlines today: whether its use is defensible in certain contexts and the morality of the practice. Wikinews reporter David Shankbone was curious about torture in American popular culture. This is the first of a two part series examining the BDSM business. This interview focuses on the owners of a dungeon, what they charge, what the clients are like and how they handle their needs.

When Shankbone rings the bell of “HC & Co.” he has no idea what to expect. A BDSM (Bondage Discipline Sadism Masochism) dungeon is a legal enterprise in New York City, and there are more than a few businesses that cater to a clientèle that wants an enema, a spanking, to be dressed like a baby or to wear women’s clothing. Shankbone went to find out what these businesses are like, who runs them, who works at them, and who frequents them. He spent three hours one night in what is considered one of the more upscale establishments in Manhattan, Rebecca’s Hidden Chamber, where according to The Village Voice, “you can take your girlfriend or wife, and have them treated with respect—unless they hope to be treated with something other than respect!”

When Shankbone arrived on the sixth floor of a midtown office building, the elevator opened up to a hallway where a smiling Rebecca greeted him. She is a beautiful forty-ish Long Island mother of three who is dressed in smart black pants and a black turtleneck that reaches up to her blond-streaked hair pulled back in a bushy ponytail. “Are you David Shankbone? We’re so excited to meet you!” she says, and leads him down the hall to a living room area with a sofa, a television playing an action-thriller, an open supply cabinet stocked with enema kits, and her husband Bill sitting at the computer trying to find where the re-release of Blade Runner is playing at the local theater. “I don’t like that movie,” says Rebecca.

Perhaps the most poignant moment came at the end of the night when Shankbone was waiting to be escorted out (to avoid running into a client). Rebecca came into the room and sat on the sofa. “You know, a lot of people out there would like to see me burn for what I do,” she says. Rebecca is a woman who has faced challenges in her life, and dealt with them the best she could given her circumstances. She sees herself as providing a service to people who have needs, no matter how debauched the outside world deems them. They sat talking mutual challenges they have faced and politics (she’s supporting Hillary); Rebecca reflected upon the irony that many of the people who supported the torture at Abu Ghraib would want her closed down. It was in this conversation that Shankbone saw that humanity can be found anywhere, including in places that appear on the surface to cater to the inhumanity some people in our society feel towards themselves, or others.

“The best way to describe it,” says Bill, “is if you had a kink, and you had a wife and you had two kids, and every time you had sex with your wife it just didn’t hit the nail on the head. What would you do about it? How would you handle it? You might go through life feeling unfulfilled. Or you might say, ‘No, my kink is I really need to dress in women’s clothing.’ We’re that outlet. We’re not the evil devil out here, plucking people off the street, keeping them chained up for days on end.”

What is a Time and Attendance System?

Bruce Anderson

What is a time and attendance system?

Time and attendance systems are the computerized equivalent of the paper time sheet. Time and attendance systems automate day-to-day employee tasks such as scheduling employees, tracking work hours, managing project costing and calculating accrued benefit entitlements. These systems commonly replace scheduling systems that are done on spreadsheets.

Time and attendance software systems can reduce the administrative hassles of managing paper time slips and can greatly reduce the mistakes. They are mostly needed in bigger companies with staff whose work schedules are constantly changing. They can also cut down on the biggest crime: buddy punching. (See for more)

Time and attendance systems provide time tracking and schedule management capabilities including setting the break times, lunches, time off and overtime. The systems will also track late punches and show any patterns of absenteeism. Most systems also include auditing and reporting tools as well as give managers direct access to their employee data.

Who uses Time and Attendance Systems?

Companies with employees who are mostly salaried probably don’t need a time and attendance system. Companies with mostly hourly or part-time employees probably do as do companies with a mix of salaried and hourly staff.

The need for a time and attendance system often begins when a company hits about 25 employees. As the company size grows so do the system needs. Companies with more than 1,000 employees often turn go larger, more powerful systems that can create complex schedules, incorporate more advanced labor planning and can even include employees’ desired work schedules. Other more complex issues that may be required are Labor Budgeting, Labor Planning and Key Performance Indicators (KPI). These more advanced features can be used in any size of company but tend to not be used until at least 100 employees and generally not until 500 plus employees

Time and labor management systems, which in fact are the same as Time and Attendance systems, (see What is the difference between Time & Attendance and Time and Labor Management), that are designed for larger companies feature more sophisticated functionality such as recording an employee’s daily work by project, job and/or location and sophisticated job costing and job planning capabilities. They also have more robust reporting tools. Job costing is invaluable to companies that need to monitor their workforce productivity or forecast their workforce needs.

How do Time and Attendance Systems work?

Employees use identification cards or a computer to punch in and out each day. Some use proximity cards which only need to be waved near a time clock reader. Magnetic stripe cards are also often used. For security purposes and to avoid buddy punching some companies use biometric input devices that check handprints or fingerprints to ensure that the correct employee is doing the punching in and out.

A growing number of companies are letting their employees enter their own information directly into the time and attendance system. They allow them to enter their vacation time, sick time and their flex-time hours.

How do you find a good Time and Attendance System?

You can surf the internet or you can go to and use the Time Attendance Software Selection Tool. The Selection Tool will ask you a series of questions and then show you the products best suited to your requirements.

As of 10:00 p.m EST November 8, 2006, the Democratic Party is projected to have gained control of both the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate in the 2006 United States general elections. MSNBC projects that the Democrats now control 234 seats in the House of Representatives, 16 more seats than the 218 needed to control the House of Representatives as all 435 seats were up for election. In the Senate, where the balance of power is closer, one-third of all seats were up for grab. As of 10:00 p.m. EST, AP and Reuters were projecting that the Democrats had picked up all six seats they needed to retake the Senate, including the seats of incumbents Rick Santorum (Penn.), Lincoln Chafee (R.I.), Jim Talent (Missouri), Mike DeWine (Ohio), John Tester (Montana), and Jim Webb (VA). The Tester victory by less than 3,000 votes was projected at approximately 2 p.m. EST after the State of Montana announced the results of overnight recounts. Democrat Jim Webb has prevailed in that race by slightly more than 7,000 votes, though his opponent has not conceded and a recount may still occur.

CanadaVOTES: Libertarian John Kittridge in St. Paul’s

Tuesday, January 24th, 2017

Monday, October 13, 2008

In an attempt to speak with as many candidates as possible during the 2008 Canadian federal election, Wikinews has talked via email with John Kittredge. John is a candidate in Toronto, Ontario’s St. Paul riding, running under the Libertarian Party banner. Libertarians are a minor, registered political party; they are looking to earn their first ever seat in the House of Commons.

Incumbent Carolyn Bennett of the Liberals is running against Libertarian Kittridge, Conservative Heather Jewell, New Democrat Anita Agrawal, and Justin Erdman, a Green. Bennett was the Minister of Health under previous Prime Minister Paul Martin’s Liberal government. Since it was created in 1935, the riding has been batted about between the Liberals and the now defunct Progessive Conservative party.

The following is an interview with Mr. Kittridge, conducted via email. The interview has had very limited editing, to eliminate in-text mentions of website addresses, but is otherwise left exactly as sent to Wikinews.

Employees of Mumbai’s bus service BEST announce indefinite strike

Tuesday, January 24th, 2017

Friday, April 21, 2006

At least 45,000 employees of the BEST, Mumbai‘s public transport provider, are going on strike indefinitely. Workers are unhappy with changes made to wages and are concerned about their working conditions. Union leaders say the strike will end when the company rethinks its decision.

Nearly 3,300 buses will be taken off the road since talks with union leaders have drawn an inconclusive response; at least 450,000 commuters are expected to be affected by the strike. Another round of talks is expected to take place later today. An Industrial Court has termed the strike call illegal. BEST has warned employees participating in the strike that they would be faced with disciplinary action.

Sharad Rao, General Secretary of BEST’s workers union, said that “the management took this decision arbitrarily without even coming to the negotiating table. They moved to the committee to change the wages and other conditions on their own, and that is absolutely illegal. Three days ago, they have again moved to the BHT committee asking them to freeze the dearness allowance which no worker is going to tolerate”. Dearness Allowance is an inflation-linked component of wages.

“I have been on the road for the last one hour. Normally I would have just hopped on to a bus,” said commuter Mukul Chandan. Commuter Janki Patel reported, “I travel by bus everyday, but today because of the strike I have had to take an auto and its going to cost me Rs 200 just one way.”

Grand Theft Auto under fire

Tuesday, January 24th, 2017

Sunday, July 17, 2005

The Grand Theft Auto (G.T.A.) game series, based on the underworld, pushes social limits on violence and sexual content in the video gaming industry. The newer Grand Theft Auto 3 release sparked controversy when it came to light the plot was based on an unnamed character’s mission to destroy and slaughter his way to the top of the local crime scene. Since that release, further games were developed: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Thursday, according to a report filed by Gamespot, congresswoman Hillary Clinton called on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to “take immediate action to determine the source of graphic pornographic and violent content appearing on the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas video game.” Clinton also wanted the FTC to determine if an “AO” rating would be more suitable for the game than current “M” rating.

Clinton said she would work quickly to create a bill for a federal law that would “put some teeth into video game ratings.” The federal legislation by Clinton would follow similar state initiatives. California assemblymen Leland Yee introduced a bill in his state, as did Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich. The purpose of the state and federal bills would be to “prohibit the sale of violent and sexually explicit video games to minors.” The passage and enactment of the proposed bill by Clinton would make it a federal offence to sell video game content to persons under the age of the games’s rating.

Like many Grand Theft Auto gamers, the Entertainment Software Rating Board(ESRB) is cautious over Clinton legislative proposal. Patricia Vance, the president of ESRB, issued this statement: “We urge all parties not to rush to judgment until all of the relevant facts, some of which are highly technical and complicated, have been established. Any second guessing at this point would be premature and inappropriate as this investigation continues.” Vance said amongst the ESRB’s top interests were to protect children, to educate parents, and make sure parents make good decisions on what video games their children be allowed to play.

Jack Thompson, the subject of beefs with Grand Theft Auto in the past, is a Republican attorney from Miami. Thompson sent out an email to major gaming outlets (Gamespot for example). The letter at first stated “I, as a lifelong Republican, am going to thank Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton,” and offered admiration for Clinton’s campaign against violence and sexual content in video games. The email then went on to criticize Doug Lowenstein, who helps manage ESRB and is the president of the Entertainment Software Association. Thompson wrote, “Doug Lowenstein could have prevented what is going to happen today, but he preferred to shoot the messengers.” Thompson also mentioned the Columbine High School massacre, and claimed it was the fault of the developers of games (specifically id Software, the maker of Doom). He claims the U.S. Constitution first amendment right to freedom of speech in no way protects the gaming industry from censorship.

Lowenstein issued the following statement regarding the current video game/Hot Coffee issue: “Retailers should not sell Mature games to minors, parents should watch what their kids watch, and parents should and can rely on the ESRB ratings to make the right choices for their families. We hope that… Senator Clinton will abandon the bill and work cooperatively with industry and others to ensure that parents take advantage of the effective tools on the market to regulate the games their kids play.”

Although some of the statements mentioned are related to video games in general and not so much GTA, a majority of all of this recently publicity did indeed start with the Hot Coffee mod for Grand Theft Auto. ESRB has never been pressured any harder in the past than they are now, and Rockstar still denies that they put the sex scenes in the game; although it has been recently demonstrated that Action Max-Replay (a cheat/feature-unlocking system for the Sony PlayStation 2) allows the user to play the “mini sex games” – the exact same thing the Hot Coffee mod unlocks for the PC version of GTA San Andreas.

Americans Obsessed With Smartphones Than Security}

As the title suggests, Americans are persistently craving for more techno-gadget feeds with newer and better wireless devices for communication arriving in the global mobile market. Recently, I watched a webinar presented by Google. It said that mobile internet users increase significantly on weekends. If desktop PC is not available, people dont hesitate to use their smartphone interface to access internet. This data in itself opens up lot of potency in related fields.

Future Workplace

According to, the future workplace would be beyond the four-walled phenomenon. The technological advancements in mobile devices have minimized the requirement of the physical presence of an employee in his cubicle. Thanks to present smartphones, the traditional employee has transformed into a mobile worker. Irrespective of different time zones and locations, he can work longer through his tablet or send that client mail through his phone. Its like new flexible hours of working has surfaced in the online world.

YouTube Preview Image

However, such developments in enterprise computing have also made companies vulnerable for data security breach. It has happened that the unsuspecting employee became a victim of data or device theft containing sensitive company information. Thus, pertaining to this, many vigilant corporate enterprises have opted for optimum mobile security software applications. Ranging from desktop PCs to wireless devices such anti-theft software become life-savers for both the employee and corporation. Some anti-theft software for Windows also come up with versions compatible with other popular OS.

More Kids with Smartphones Till 2012

The Google webinar also said that more than half of all Americans would have a smartphone till 2012 ends. Smartphones have defined themselves as more than just a utility object. With its incredible features and in-built options such as GPS, it has proved itself as a lifestyle statement. Kids who like to flaunt their newer and flashy mobile gadgets are likely to become a piece of popularity within their peer groups. However, a coin has two sides.

Opposing true and safe mobility, there have been cases of cyber crimes committed involving kids and against them. And, the suspected medium found was a smartphone. It is right that being a parent is very hard. Unlike earlier days, it is difficult to keep an eye over young teenagers and children walking with a smartphone today. You always fear that they might become victims of cyber bullying. You become livid of wondering if your kid is not falling for a sexual predator or pedophile that your kids call as a friend. You wish you could secretly monitor your childs mobile calls, SMS logs and online phone activity. Even more than that!

As an answer to the above, there are many mobile phone parental control software that come as solution to your problems. You can install it in your kids phone and find his actual location through GPS receiver in the phone. Worried parents can be relieved with such helpful mobile applications that could save their kids from going off track.

Therefore, to sum up, Americans are embracing the perpetual technologically-advanced communication gadgets with open arms. Nevertheless, the burning question is how much are they prepared to face this huge upsurge in smartphone usage, especially kids?

Italy seeks indictment of U.S. marine

Sunday, January 22nd, 2017

Tuesday, June 20, 2006

Italian prosecutors have asked a judge to indict a United States soldier for fatally shooting Italian intelligence officer Nicola Calipari at a roadblock in Iraq a year ago. The shooting occurred when Calipari was escorting the Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena on her way to Baghdad airport. When their car came under fire from U.S. Marines at a roadblock, Calipari was fatally shot while trying to shield Sgrena, who was only lightly wounded in the incident.

The circumstances of the shooting are a matter of dispute between Italy and the United States. The U.S. military claims that the car was approaching the checkpoint at high speed, when the troops attempted to signal the car with light signals, aiming a green laser at the windshield and warning shots. When the car failed to slow down, the soldiers shot into the engine of the car.

The Italian government claims that there were no warning signs prior to the shootings. They contest that the car was speeding and that it accelerated after the first round of fire. Moreover, they allege that a proper inquiry into the case was impossible since the vehicle was removed and army logs destroyed shortly after the incident.

Italian prosecutors are arguing that the shooting was a “political murder” as Calipari was a civil servant and the shooting damaged Italy’s interests. In Italy, murder suspects cannot be tried in absentia unless the murder has political connotations. It is expected to take at least two months for a judge to rule on the indictment request.

The U.S. Embassy in Rome declined to comment.
